FIRST RELEASE OF HOSPITAL DISCHARGE DATA THAT INCLUDES CDC'S COVID-19 DIAGNOSIS CODE

2020 PATIENT LEVEL DATA FOR QUARTER 2 NOW AVAILABLE

Virginia Health Information has published its Patient Level Data (PLD) for Q2 2020. This marks the first release of hospital discharge data available that includes records with the CDC's diagnosis code for COVID-19 (U07.1). In Q2 2020, there were over 4,900 discharges with a primary diagnosis of COVID-19 (3% of total discharges) and over 8,790 discharges with a primary or secondary diagnosis (5% of total discharges). Overall, the total number of discharges decreased by roughly 18% to 179,120 between April-June 2020 compared to 218,384 total discharges for the same timeframe in 2019. Data for Q2 indicates that the Northern Virginia Health Planning Region had the highest percentage of discharges related to COVID-19 during the time period, 12% or over twice the statewide average. Below are the key stats from Q2 2020 data, specifically for discharges with a primary diagnosis of COVID-19:

VHI is the only source for the complete database of all licensed Virginia hospital discharges. The PLD includes patient demographic, administrative, clinical and financial information on every discharge that occurs in a Virginia licensed hospital. With over 850,000 discharges per year, the PLD can be used by businesses, hospitals, insurers and physicians to answer questions on utilization, planning, quality improvement and other relevant topics. The PLD is available approximately six months after the end of each calendar quarter.
